Background

The Rastatt Railway Tunnel is a major project central to the expansion of Deutsche Bahn AG’s Karlsruhe–Basel high-speed rail line.

Because the structure is located in the geologically active Upper Rhine Plain, continuous monitoring is required during the construction phase. This protects the surrounding buildings and ensures the structural integrity of the structure.

Requirements

This challenging project required an efficient measurement method capable of detecting three-dimensional deformations and relative movements between the concrete segments at the micrometer level. The system had to ensure close-mesh real-time monitoring to trigger immediate alerts, particularly during underground stabilization work. In addition to automated data transmission, the project managers required minimal installation effort and long battery life for the hardware used.

Solution

To meet the criteria, the client implemented SuessCo 3D XT sensors. These were mounted directly at the joints of the tunnel segments, where they continuously recorded even the slightest movements. The collected data packets were transmitted directly to the digital SuessCo Datahub via a cellular network. The data was used to visualize the 3D deformations along the tunnel tube.

The use of SuessCo Sensors’ technology ensured the long-term quality of the tunnel construction and provided the interdisciplinary team of experts with in-depth insights into the structure’s movement behavior in near real time. Automated monitoring allowed for an immediate response to construction activities, ensuring maximum safety for the entire infrastructure project. The innovative measurement concept also proved to be highly cost-effective, as the quick installation and long-lasting sensors completely eliminated the need for time-consuming maintenance cycles in the tunnel.

The XT 3D sensors provide us with precise and stable measurement data wirelessly in three dimensions. This enables safe remote monitoring of sensitive tunnel areas and significantly reduces our on-site workload.
