Background

Stuttgart 21 is a comprehensive transportation and urban development project that is redesigning Stuttgart’s rail transportation hub. The project involves the construction of new, mostly underground rail lines, passenger stations, and a new central station. Among the historic buildings is the “Bonatzbau,” the historic main station building at Stuttgart Central Station, which is undergoing extensive modernization.

Requirements

The construction group STRABAG/Züblin commissioned SuessCo Sensors to set up a digital monitoring system. This system was designed to measure vibrations, cracks, settlement, and tilting of the historic building structure during the renovation work. The goal was therefore to identify potential problem areas at an early stage, implement appropriate corrective measures, and ensure digital documentation.

Solution

SuessCo Sensors implemented an innovative digital monitoring system. This system comprised high-precision 6D sensors that recorded three linear axes, three spatial angles, and temperature data, combined with vibration sensors for continuous vibration monitoring. In addition, a GNSS system was integrated, which determined the absolute position of a point relative to a defined origin with an accuracy of ±2 mm. All measurement data was automatically transmitted to the SuessCo Datahub via the cellular network.

This innovative sensor and monitoring system provides a fully digital solution. The manual surveying tasks previously required at such construction sites can now be carried out more efficiently, cost-effectively, and easily. At the same time, the system makes it easier for the project operator to maintain complete and continuous documentation.

This project demonstrates how digital monitoring projects can contribute to safety and documentation during the construction phase.

As the general contractor, it was particularly important for us to have partners on board whom we could rely on 100%. With such a complex and high-profile construction site, there is simply no room for error. Safety is our top priority. With SuessCo, we were able to ensure this much more easily, efficiently, and ultimately more cost-effectively. Thank you very much!
